About
Helon Blount (January 15, 1929 – March 7, 2005) was an American actress and singer whose Broadway career spanned from 1956 to 1983. Born in Big Spring, Texas, she studied fine arts and music at the University of Texas, where she earned a master's degree in voice pedagogy. Before relocating to New York City, she performed in the chorus of the Dallas State Fair Musicals for two summers.
Blount made her Broadway debut in 1956 in Frank Loesser's The Most Happy Fella, joining the original production first as understudy for the role of Cleo before assuming the role during the Broadway run. It was during this production that she met her future husband, Keith Kaldenberg, a fellow cast member. The couple had a daughter, Kim.
Her subsequent Broadway credits included Do I Hear a Waltz? in 1965, The Fig Leaves Are Falling in 1969, and Musical Chairs. In 1971 she originated the role of Dee Dee West in Stephen Sondheim's Follies, also serving as understudy for the roles of Hattie and Stella. In 1981 she appeared in Kander and Ebb's Woman of the Year, which starred Lauren Bacall, playing multiple characters. Beyond Broadway, Blount appeared in the Off-Broadway musical Riverwind in 1962.
Later in her career, Blount performed regionally, playing Granny Briggs in a revised production of Loesser's Greenwillow at the Golden Apple Dinner Theatre in Sarasota, Florida in 1997. That performance earned her a South Florida Sammie Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Musical. Blount's husband predeceased her. She died on March 7, 2005, survived by their daughter Kim.
