About

Helena D'Algy (June 18, 1906 – 1992) was a Portuguese actress and opera singer whose career spanned stage, screen, and television across multiple countries. Born in Portugal, she spent part of her early childhood in Spain before her family relocated. She and her brother, Tony D'Algy, both developed an interest in performance at a young age and joined a stock company in Buenos Aires, where she established herself as an actress on stage and screen.

Before arriving in the United States, D'Algy had built a substantial musical résumé, having performed as a prima donna with the Opéra-Comique in Paris and as one of the principal singers with the Spanish Grand Opera Company on tour in Buenos Aires and Montevideo. She was noted for possessing a love soprano voice. She arrived in New York in May 1923 and, after an initial period of difficulty, came to the attention of producer Florenz Ziegfeld, who signed her. She performed for a full season in his celebrated Follies, appearing in both the Ziegfeld Follies of 1918 and the Ziegfeld Follies of 1923 Summer Edition, credits that are part of her verified Broadway record spanning 1923 to 1931.

Her stage work with Ziegfeld opened doors in Hollywood. She was cast in Lend Me Your Husband, followed by The Fool and Let No Man Put Asunder, and subsequently appeared in Paramount's The Side Show of Life. At Paramount, D'Algy was considered a significant discovery; critics noted that she photographed exceptionally well while also demonstrating genuine dramatic range. Though her appearance suited the role of a Spanish heroine, she was not regarded as limited to a single type. Her most prominent film role came opposite Rudolph Valentino in Paramount's A Sainted Devil (1924), in which her brother Tony also appeared in a supporting capacity. She continued working in film between 1925 and 1926.

The transition to sound film proved difficult for D'Algy, and she returned to Broadway, appearing in the play The Sex Fable in 1931. She later starred in the Spanish-language film Suburban Melody (1933), which performed well at the box office and stands as her last known film role. Decades later, in 1991, she appeared in the Spanish television series Imágenes perdidas. D'Algy died in 1992.
