About
Helen Joan Stenborg (January 24, 1925 – March 22, 2011) was an American actress born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, whose career spanned stage, screen, and television across several decades. She was active on Broadway from 1970 to 2002 and earned recognition as a versatile performer in both classical revivals and original productions.
Stenborg's Broadway work included revivals of The Crucible, A Month in the Country, and A Doll's House, as well as the original American production of Noël Coward's Waiting in the Wings. Her performance in Waiting in the Wings earned her a Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Play in 2000. She also starred in A Life and appeared in the Lanford Wilson plays The Rimers of Eldritch and Talley & Son, the latter of which brought her an Obie Award.
Her screen career included a recurring role as Helga Lindeman on the soap opera Another World from 1977 to 1978. Among her film appearances were Three Days of the Condor (1975), The Europeans (1979), Starting Over (1979), The Bonfire of the Vanities (1990), Marvin's Room (1996), and Doubt (2008), which served as her final film role. She also appeared in the 1999 short film My Mother Dreams the Satan's Disciples in New York, which won the Academy Award for Best Short Subject in 2000.
Stenborg married actor Barnard Hughes in 1950, and the two were occasionally paired together on stage. Their marriage lasted 56 years, until Hughes's death in 2006. They had two children: a son, Doug, who became a theater director, and a daughter, Laura. Stenborg died on March 22, 2011, in New York City at the age of 86.
