About

Helen Ford, born Helen Isabel Barnett on June 6, 1894, in Troy, New York, was an American actress whose Broadway career spanned from 1906 to 1942. She died on January 19, 1982, in Glendale, California, following a stroke.

Ford grew up in Troy, where her father worked as a manufacturer. Recognized as a musical prodigy in childhood, she pursued formal training in both voice and piano at a conservatory of music in her hometown. Her early professional work included an appearance in The Heart of Annie Wood in New York in 1918, followed shortly after by a role in Sometime.

Her career gained significant momentum in the 1920s. In 1920, she played Toinette in Always You, which marked Oscar Hammerstein's first musical. She became closely associated with the collaborative team of Rodgers, Hart, and Fields, starring in three of their Broadway productions: Dearest Enemy in 1925, Peggy-Ann in 1926, and Chee-Chee in 1928. She also took Dearest Enemy on the road in a touring production.

Among her other Broadway credits were The Rivalry, Retreat to Pleasure, Great Lady, Champagne, Sec, and The Other One. Beyond the stage, Ford appeared in films and television productions, including The Raid.

In 1926, Ford was drawn into a court case in District Court in New York City stemming from her appearance at the Knickerbocker Theater dressed only in a barrel. The proceedings centered on whether her husband, George Ford, had committed perjury before a grand jury regarding whether the barrel had contained champagne. Ford had married George Ford, a producer of touring Shakespearean festivals, on August 9, 1918.

Following her death, Ford was cremated and her ashes were interred in the crypt beneath the chapel at Grand View Memorial Park Cemetery in Glendale, California.
