About

Helen Dunbar, born Katheryn Burke Lackey on October 10, 1863, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was an American theatrical performer and silent film actress whose career in stage and screen spanned thirty-five years. She died on August 28, 1933, from complications of arthritis at the home of her daughter, located at 1203 Poinsettia Place in Los Angeles, California. Her funeral was held at Pierce Brothers' Mortuary, and she was interred at Hollywood Forever Cemetery.

Dunbar began her theatrical career with the Weber & Fields Stock Company at the outset of that company's presence on the New York stage. In 1899 she appeared at the Weber and Fields' Broadway Music Hall in both Whirl-i-gig and The Other Way, as well as in Helter Skelter. Her stage work also brought her into association with the Charles Dillingham Company and the Boston Opera Company.

Her transition to motion pictures began in 1912 with Out of the Depths, a production starring Francis X. Bushman. Dunbar subsequently became a leading lady at Essanay Studios and later worked under contract to Famous Players–Lasky for a number of years. Over the course of her film career she appeared alongside performers including Harry Cashman, Richard Carroll, Ruth Stonehouse, Beverly Bayne, Frank Keenan, John Gilbert, Mary Astor, Phyllis Haver, Norma Talmadge, and Noah Beery. Her final film appearance came in Stranded in Paris (1926), which featured Bebe Daniels and Tom Ricketts.
