About
Helen Dowdy was an American actress and singer born in New York City who performed on Broadway from 1930 to 1954. She died in February 1971 in New York.
Dowdy is most closely associated with George Gershwin's Porgy and Bess, in which she originated the dual roles of Lily and the Strawberry Woman — parts she continued to perform across multiple productions for nearly two decades. Her sustained commitment to the opera extended into the recording studio: on the 1951 production's so-called "complete" recording, Dowdy sang both of her signature roles as well as the role of Maria.
Her Broadway credits encompassed a range of productions across multiple decades. In addition to Porgy and Bess, she appeared in the play Scarlet Sister Mary, Mamba's Daughters, and Run, Little Chillun. In the 1946 revival of Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein's Show Boat, Dowdy played Queenie, a role that had been originated by Tess Gardella in the musical's 1927 premiere. She also appeared in the musical Kiss Me! among other productions.
Beyond the stage, Dowdy performed with Katherine Dunham's troupe on tour in 1944. Her work in television included an appearance on the October 17, 1957, episode of Hallmark Hall of Fame, in which she played the Stout Angel in a production of Marc Connelly's Pulitzer Prize-winning play The Green Pastures.
