About

Heather MacRae, born October 5, 1946, in New York, New York, is an American actress whose career has spanned Broadway, film, and television. The daughter of performers Gordon MacRae and Sheila MacRae, both established names in motion pictures, stage, and television, MacRae grew up in a family deeply rooted in entertainment. Her sister Meredith MacRae was also an actress, and she has two brothers, Bruce and Gar. MacRae studied at the University of Colorado before leaving to pursue a professional career in show business.

Her Broadway career extended from 1968 to 2008 and included productions such as Hair, Jesus Christ Superstar, Coastal Disturbances, A Catered Affair, and Falsettos. The range of those credits reflects a sustained presence on the New York stage across four decades.

MacRae's film work includes a role in Woody Allen's 1972 comedy Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex* (*But Were Afraid to Ask), as well as parts in The Connection (1973), Bang the Drum Slowly (1973), Secrets of Three Hungry Wives (1978), and Life with Mikey (1993). In 1979, she appeared in a singing role in Robert Altman's A Perfect Couple.

Her television appearances include guest roles on Starsky and Hutch, Frasier, and The Sopranos, along with a recurring role on Sex and the City as the judge who officiates Miranda and Steve's outdoor wedding ceremony. She also held continuing roles on the daytime serials The Best of Everything and One Life to Live.

Beyond stage and screen, MacRae has pursued cabaret performance. In 1983, she and her mother presented a cabaret act at the Inner Circle in New York City. A New York Times review described the pair as "the oddest cabaret couple," observing that their entertainment styles differed and that they took turns in the spotlight rather than performing together. In 1999, MacRae performed a solo cabaret show titled Songs of My Father in Chicago, in which she sang material associated with her father and spoke about his experiences in music.
