About
Hazel Jones (17 October 1896 – 13 November 1974) was a British actress born in Swarraton, England, who built a career spanning decades on both the London and New York stages. She died on 13 November 1974 at St. Vincent's Hospital in New York City at the age of 79.
Jones began her stage career at the age of 12, making her London debut as a maid in Louis N. Parker's Pomander Walk. Her early work included The Two Hunchbacks in 1910, and she went on to appear alongside Cyril Maude in The Headmaster and with Sir Gerald du Maurier in Raffles. Among the many London productions that followed were L'Aiglon, Nurse Benson, Green Pastures, Piccadilly, Too Many Cooks, and Damaged Goods, accumulating approximately 50 London stage credits over the course of her career there.
Her film work included Sisters in Arms in 1918, The Secret of the Moor in 1919, and Is Your Daughter Safe? in 1927. The Secret of the Moor centered on a boatman who smuggles gold for a miner but is reformed after his child falls ill.
After her extensive London career, Jones made her Broadway debut in 1945 at the Ethel Barrymore Theater, appearing in George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion alongside Gertrude Lawrence and Raymond Maisey. She continued performing on Broadway through 1963, with credits that included The First Mrs. Fraser, Gayden, The Living Room, the drama The Entertainer, Once for the Asking, and Tea Party.
