About
Hazel Cole was a Broadway performer whose stage career included an appearance in the 1924 musical The Chocolate Dandies.
Cole was also part of a husband-and-wife songwriting partnership with Grady Cole that was active during the 1930s and 1940s. The pair produced numerous songs during that period and became associated with the gospel tune "The Tramp on the Street," though the song's origins have been attributed to Elizabeth Mae Wyatt, a sharecropper from Mississippi who is said to have written and sold it. The song later gained wider recognition through recordings by artists including Hank Williams and Joan Baez.
