About

Haydn Gwynne was an English actress born on 21 March 1957 in Hurstpierpoint, West Sussex, to Rosamond (née Dobson) and Guy Thomas Haydn Gwynne. She died on 20 October 2023, aged 66, following a cancer diagnosis one month before her death. She is survived by two sons.

Before pursuing acting, Gwynne studied sociology at the University of Nottingham and was fluent in French and Italian. She competed at county level in tennis during her earlier years. Following university, she spent five years as a lecturer at the University of Rome La Sapienza, where she taught English as a foreign language. She came to acting in her mid-twenties.

Her early television work included the role of Cosima in the Lovejoy two-part special "Death and Venice" in 1986, and the part of feminist lecturer Dr Robyn Penrose in the BBC dramatisation of David Lodge's Nice Work in 1989. Her first prominent comedy role came in 1990 when she was cast as Alex Pates in the Channel 4 series Drop the Dead Donkey, a performance that earned her a BAFTA TV Award nomination for Best Light Entertainment Performance in 1992. She subsequently appeared in the Children's ITV science-fiction series Time Riders in 1991. From 1999 to 2000, she played Dr Joanna Graham in Peak Practice, joining the series at the start of its seventh series and remaining until the character was fatally shot in the thirteenth episode of series nine. She then starred in Merseybeat from 2001 to 2002, and appeared in the BBC television drama The Secret in 2002 as Emma Faraday.

Later television credits included the role of Calpurnia in the series Rome, a guest appearance in the Midsomer Murders Christmas special "Ghosts of Christmas Past" in 2004, and a guest role in Lewis in 2008. She appeared as Miss Wenceslas, a museum curator, in the Sherlock episode "The Great Game" in 2010, and featured in the 2011 film Hunky Dory. In 2014 she appeared in Ripper Street and in the Silent Witness episode "Fraternity," as well as in the sitcom Uncle and the crime comedy-drama Death in Paradise. In 2015 she appeared in the Father Brown episode "The Last Man." From 2016 until her death in 2023, she played Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, in the Channel 4 sitcom The Windsors. In 2022 she portrayed Susan Hussey in the fifth series of The Crown, written by Peter Morgan.

Gwynne's stage career encompassed regional theatre, West End productions, and work with the Royal Shakespeare Company. Her theatre credits included Hedda Gabler at the Octagon in Bolton, Ziegfeld as Billie Burke in the West End in 1988, and productions of City of Angels and Way of the World. She performed at the Almeida Theatre in Becky Shaw, which ran from January to March 2011, and starred alongside Kevin Spacey in Richard III at the Old Vic during the summer of 2011 as part of the Bridge Project. In 2012 she toured in Duet for One, and in 2013 she appeared as Margaret Thatcher in the premiere of Peter Morgan's stage play The Audience. In 2015 she starred alongside Tamsin Greig in Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown at the Playhouse in London. In 2016 she played Mrs Peacham in Simon Stephens' adaptation of Threepenny Opera at the National Theatre, alongside Rory Kinnear, Nick Holder, Rosalie Craig, and Sharon Small. In October 2021 she took over the role of Evangeline Harcourt in the London revival of Anything Goes at the Barbican Theatre. In 2022 she performed "The Ladies Who Lunch" in the Stephen Sondheim gala tribute Old Friends, though she was forced to withdraw from the subsequent run of the show shortly before its opening in September 2023. In 2023 she appeared as Pam Lee in The Great British Bake Off Musical and as Stanley Baldwin in Jack Thorne's When Winston Went to War With the Wireless at the Donmar Warehouse.

Gwynne first played Mrs Wilkinson in Billy Elliot the Musical at the Victoria Palace Theatre in London's West End, a role for which she received an Olivier Award nomination. She reprised the role on Broadway when the production opened at the Imperial Theatre on 13 November 2008. Her performance earned her the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Featured Actress in a Musical in 2009, the Theatre World Award in 2009, and the Outer Critics Circle Award. She was also nominated for the 2009 Tony Award for Featured Actress in a Musical.

Gwynne was a five-time Laurence Olivier Award nominee over the course of her career. In 2024, she posthumously won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her performance in When Winston Went to War With the Wireless.
