Hubert Edward Hassard Short, known professionally as Hassard Short, was a British-born actor, stage director, set designer, and lighting designer whose career spanned both Broadway and the West End. Born in Edlington, England, Short became a significant figure in musical theatre, ultimately directing more than 50 productions across Broadway and London's West End.
Short began his Broadway career as a performer in 1901, appearing in a range of productions over the following two decades. His acting credits included the musicals Betsy and The Girl from Home, as well as the plays Glad of It, Peg O' My Heart, and East is West, among other productions. His time on stage as a performer continued through 1919, giving him nearly two decades of experience as an actor before his work behind the scenes came to define his legacy.
