About
Hartley Power (14 March 1894 – 29 January 1966) was an American-born actor who built a career spanning Broadway, film, and television in both the United States and Britain. He made his Broadway debut in 1922 with Dolly Jordan, launching a stage career that continued through 1926.
During his Broadway years, Power appeared in a succession of plays that included Potash and Perlmutter, Detectives, The Fall Guy, Dawn, and Pasteur, in addition to his debut production. These credits established him as a working stage presence across the mid-1920s.
Power became particularly associated with his work in British film and television. Among his most recognized screen roles was Sylvester Kee, a ventriloquist shot and nearly killed by Michael Redgrave's character Maxwell Frere in a dispute over a dummy's affections, in the film Dead of Night. He also appeared in Roman Holiday, in which he played Mr. Hennessy, the head of the news agency that employed Gregory Peck's character.
Power died on 29 January 1966 in a nursing home in Brighton, at the age of 71.
