About

Harry Oakes Stubbs (December 7, 1874 – May 9, 1950) was an English-born American character actor whose career encompassed both Broadway and film. Born in Southampton, Hampshire, England, Stubbs emigrated from his home country at the age of 16 and eventually established himself as a working actor in the United States.

Stubbs made his Broadway debut at the age of 31, appearing in The Bad Samaritan at the Garden Theatre in September 1905, a production that ran for fifteen performances. Over the following two decades, he accumulated a total of eight Broadway credits, with his stage appearances spanning from 1905 to 1928. Among those productions were Listening In, The Dice of the Gods, The Butter and Egg Man, and Nightstick. His final Broadway appearance came with The Big Fight, which ran for approximately one month at the Majestic Theatre during September and October of 1928.

Following the conclusion of his Broadway career, Stubbs relocated to Hollywood in 1929 and transitioned into film work. His screen career coincided with the early sound era, and he appeared in more than 50 films over the course of roughly fifteen years. His first film, Alibi, afforded him a leading role, though the majority of his subsequent screen work consisted of character parts. In 1933, he performed on stage at Harold Lloyd's Beverly Hills Little Theatre for Professionals, a venue that provided stage actors with an opportunity to be seen by members of the film industry. Stubbs died on May 9, 1950, at the age of 75.
