About
Harry Hickox (October 22, 1910 – June 3, 1994) was an American character actor born in Big Spring, Texas. His career spanned stage, film, radio, and television across several decades.
Before pursuing acting, Hickox worked as a musician, playing guitar with jazz bands. Among the ensembles he performed with was the band led by Jack Teagarden. His transition to the stage began in little theater, where an early role came in a production of Idiot's Delight in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He married a fellow cast member from that production.
Hickox made his Broadway appearance in 1957 in The Music Master. His work in musical theater extended to touring productions as well, and in the early 1960s he portrayed Harold Hill in a touring company of The Music Man. He went on to appear in the 1962 film adaptation of that same show, in which he played the role of Charlie Cowell.
Together with his wife, Hickox created Jump Jump of Holiday House, a children's program that aired on both radio and television and received awards for excellence. He also produced a television program focused on jazz.
Hickox died on June 3, 1994, in Los Angeles, California, at the age of 83.
