About
Harry Gwynette (c. 1836 – 24 September 1913) was a British stage actor whose career spanned several decades and multiple continents, culminating in a Broadway presence that extended from 1883 to 1907.
Born to a surgeon father who intended for him to pursue medicine, Gwynette chose the stage instead. His early decision to pursue acting led him to Australia, which he reached by clipper ship traveling from Southampton to Melbourne. He subsequently returned to England, where he performed under Charles Kean at the Princess Theatre in London.
Gwynette later joined the burlesque company of Lydia Thompson, accompanying her troupe to the United States in 1868. That transatlantic move marked the beginning of his long association with the American stage. In later years he became a member of Richard Mansfield's company.
His Broadway career produced credits across a range of productions, including The Parish Priest, Marta of the Lowlands, Business Is Business, Beauty and the Barge, and the play Joseph, among others. These appearances placed him on Broadway stages over a period of more than two decades.
Gwynette died on 24 September 1913 at Bellevue Hospital in New York City at the age of 76.
