About
Harry Guardino, born Harold Vincent Guardino on December 23, 1925, on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, was an American actor whose stage, film, and television career extended from the early 1950s to the early 1990s. Raised in Brooklyn, New York, he became involved in theater through a Police Athletic League dramatic group during his high school years. Following graduation, he served in the United States Navy during World War II, and afterward worked as a merchant seaman before pursuing a professional acting career.
Guardino's Broadway career spanned three decades, from 1953 to 1983. His stage credits included A Hatful of Rain, One More River, Anyone Can Whistle, The Rose Tattoo, The Seven Descents of Myrtle, and Woman of the Year. His performance in One More River earned him a Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actor in a Play in 1960.
On screen, Guardino accumulated a substantial list of film credits, among them Houseboat, Pork Chop Hill, The Five Pennies, King of Kings, Madigan, Lovers and Other Strangers, Dirty Harry, and The Enforcer. He received two Golden Globe Award nominations for Best Supporting Actor, for his work in Houseboat and The Pigeon That Took Rome.
His television work was equally extensive. In 1969, he played Detective Lee Gordon in the television film The Lonely Profession. He starred in the short-lived 1971 series Monty Nash and portrayed Hamilton Burger, Perry Mason's courtroom adversary, in the 1973 series The New Perry Mason. He also held a recurring role on Murder, She Wrote and made guest appearances across dozens of series, including Playhouse 90, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Studio One, Kraft Television Theatre, The Untouchables, Ben Casey, Hawaii Five-O, Kojak, The Streets of San Francisco, Wonder Woman, Fantasy Island, and Cheers, among many others.
In 1993, Guardino was honored with a Golden Palm Star on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars. He was married three times and had a son and a daughter. His third marriage, to Elyssa Paternoster in 1985, lasted until his death. Guardino died of lung cancer at Desert Hospital in Palm Springs, California, on July 17, 1995.
