About
Harry Goz (February 16, 1932 – September 6, 2003) was an American actor born in St. Louis, Missouri, whose career spanned musical theatre, film, television, and voice acting.
Goz made his Broadway debut in the 1964 production of Bajour, which also featured Chita Rivera and Nancy Dussault. He went on to play Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof between 1966 and 1968, performing the role both as understudy and as lead actor. His subsequent Broadway work included the musical Two by Two, Neil Simon's comedy The Prisoner of Second Avenue, and Chess, for which he received a 1988 Drama Desk Award nomination for Outstanding Featured Actor in a Musical.
Beyond the stage, Goz accumulated a range of screen credits. He portrayed Dr. Tom Walz in the 1981 television film Bill and, that same year, appeared in Mommie Dearest as Alfred Steele, the Pepsi-Cola chairman who was Joan Crawford's last husband, in the film adaptation of Christina Crawford's memoir. He was also a recognizable presence in television advertising, playing The Big Apple in Fruit of the Loom commercials throughout the 1970s and 1980s and appearing in a long-running Sucrets commercial that debuted in 1977.
In his later years, Goz became the voice of Captain Hazel "Hank" Murphy on the Cartoon Network and Adult Swim series Sealab 2021, introducing him to a new generation of viewers. He died from multiple myeloma on September 6, 2003, at the age of 71, survived by his wife, three children, and nine grandchildren. His son Michael subsequently took over a new character on Sealab 2021 following his father's death, and died on November 11, 2014, at the age of 55, after an eight-year battle with cerebellar degeneration and ataxia.
