About

Harry Delmar (September 8, 1892 – August 29, 1984) was an American performer, producer, and film director born in Missouri who died in Los Angeles. Before establishing himself on Broadway, Delmar worked as a song and dance man in vaudeville, a background that would inform his later work as a theatrical producer.

Delmar made his Broadway performing debut in 1914 in the play When Claudia Smiles. He subsequently moved into producing, and on November 28, 1927, Harry Delmar's Revels opened at the Shubert Theatre, where it ran through March 1928. The musical revue combined songs, vaudeville sketches, and featured women performers. The book was written by William K. Wells, with lyrics by Ballard MacDonald and Billy Rose, and music composed by Lester Lee, Jesse Greer, and Jimmy Monaco. The cast included Hugh Cameron and Patsy Kelly, and the production marked Bert Lahr's Broadway debut.

With the rise of sound in motion pictures, Delmar transitioned to film, working first as a writer before advancing to directing and producing. His film work drew on his experience staging revues, and many of his productions featured the Eddie Elkins Orchestra. His writing credits include After the Show (1929) and Syncopated Trial (1929). As a director, he helmed America or Bust (1930), Sixteen Sweeties (1930), Ride 'em Cowboy (1930), A Night in a Dormitory (1930), Her Hired Husband (1930), and both of his 1929 writing credits. He also produced After the Show, Syncopated Trial, A Night in a Dormitory, and Her Hired Husband.

Late in his life, Delmar was collaborating with Buddy Feyne on a revue titled Up Your Alley.
