About
Harry C. Bradley, born Harry Charles Bradley Cockrill on April 15, 1869, in San Francisco, California, was an American stage and film performer whose career spanned several decades across both Broadway and Hollywood. His father, Theodore Cockrill, served as San Francisco's Chief of Police.
Bradley built nearly two decades of Broadway stage experience before transitioning to film work. His New York credits ran from 1910 to 1930 and included the musicals Luana and Adele, as well as the productions Good Gracious Annabelle, Madame X, and Abie's Irish Rose, among others. His most prominent stage achievement came through Anne Nichols' Abie's Irish Rose, in which he originated the role of Father Whelan and sustained it across all 2,327 performances of the production's run.
Following his extensive stage career, Bradley appeared in more than 200 films between 1930 and 1946, establishing himself as a prolific presence in Hollywood.
In his personal life, Bradley was married at least twice, both times to fellow stage performers. His first marriage, to Lurelle Lansing Waters in 1894, ended when she divorced him on grounds of desertion in 1906, though she continued to appear alongside him onstage under her maiden name for at least two years afterward. Beginning in 1926, Bradley was married to stage actress and singer Lorena Atwood, a union that lasted until her death in June 1947. Bradley survived her by only four months, dying of a heart attack in Hollywood on October 18, 1947.
