About

Harry Bulger (1872 – April 14, 1926) was an American actor, comedian, and librettist whose career spanned vaudeville and Broadway from the 1890s through the 1910s. He performed on Broadway between 1899 and 1917 and was also recognized as a writer, contributing the book for at least one of his stage vehicles.

Bulger launched his career in vaudeville during the early 1890s as one half of the duo Matthews and Bulger, alongside his longtime stage partner Sherrie Matthews. The pair performed as headliners on vaudeville circuits across the country until Matthews' death in 1911.

His Broadway debut came in 1899 at the Herald Square Theatre, where he originated the role of Boston Budge in the musical By the Sad Sea Waves, a production for which he also served as librettist. Over the following years he took on a succession of roles in Broadway musicals: Eli Frost in The Night of the Fourth (1901), King Henry VIII in The King's Carnival (1901), King Bardout in The Sleeping Beauty and the Beast (1901–1902), Jack in Mother Goose (1903–1904), The Blue Jay in Woodland (1904–1905), Dr. Hosler in When We Were Forty-one (1905), and Steve Waffles in The Man from Now (1906).

After a period away from Broadway, Bulger returned to the stage playing Andrew Overdraft and Joe Silver in The Cohan Revue of 1916, and subsequently appeared as Constables in the 1917 revival of Reginald DeKoven's The Highwayman. He died of pneumonia on April 14, 1926, in Freeport, New York.
