About
Harrison Stewart (1882–1918) was an American comedic actor and lyricist who performed on Broadway in 1907. His background, as reported, traced to a Virginia plantation where he worked as a plow-hand before receiving his education at Booker T. Washington Industrial School.
Stewart built an early reputation at the Pekin Theater in Chicago, where he achieved star status and received top billing. During his time there, he appeared in comedic roles across 36 productions and contributed lyrics to several shows before departing in 1908.
His Broadway credits included the play The Happy Husband and the musical Captain Rufus, both in 1907. Additional theatrical credits from this period include Two African Princes, In Zululand, and The Husband.
Following his departure from the Pekin Theater in 1908, Stewart stepped in as lead of Oyster Man, taking over the role from Ernest Hogan, who had fallen ill. After relocating to New York, he was appointed head of the Oyster Man company. His tenure with the production eventually came to an end when his own health began to decline, leading to the suspension of the show.
A photograph of Stewart in blackface appears on the cover of a songsheet for "Give Me Shelter, Grub, and Spending Change Then I'll Be Satisfied," a copy of which is held in the archives of the Denver Public Library.
