Harold Vernon Goldstein was born on December 10, 1923, in Schenectady, New York, to Lillian and Louis Goldstein. After studying at Albany Teachers College, he served in the United States Army during World War II. He performed in summer stock before pursuing theatre studies at Cornell, where he met his wife, Lea Vernon. They had three children: Deborah, Joshua, and Lowell.

His film credits include "The Sting," "Love and Death," "Silent Movie," "Freaky Friday," "Stuart Little," "Brother Bear," "Marnie," "Patch Adams," and "Whisper of the Heart."
