Harley Knoles

Harley Knoles was a performer and director active in the early twentieth century whose career spanned both the Broadway stage and the silent film industry. Born in 1880, Knoles died in 1936.

His Broadway career ran from 1910 to 1914 and included appearances in Vik and The Girl and the Kaiser.

Knoles subsequently built a substantial career as a film director during the silent era, working primarily in British and American cinema. His directorial output began in 1915 with The Greater Will and The Master Hand, and he went on to direct a large number of productions over the following decade and beyond. Among his films were Bought and Paid For, His Brother's Wife, and The Devil's Toy, all from 1916. In 1917 alone he directed numerous pictures, including The Volunteer, The Stolen Paradise, The Price of Pride, Adventures of Carol, The Little Duchess, A Square Deal, The Burglar, Souls Adrift, The Page Mystery, The Social Leper, and A Square Deal.

Knoles continued directing into the late silent period, with credits including Little Women and Stolen Orders in 1918, and Bolshevism on Trial in 1919. His work in the early 1920s included Guilty of Love, Half an Hour, A Romantic Adventuress, The Great Shadow, Carnival, and The Bohemian Girl. He remained active through the latter part of the decade, directing Lew Tyler's Wives and Oh, Baby! in 1926, followed by Land of Hope and Glory and The White Sheik in 1927 and 1928 respectively. His final screen credit was Irish Hearts in 1934.
