About
Hari Dhillon is an American actor born and raised in San Francisco, California, who has worked across stage, television, and film. During his childhood, he spent nine months in India. He took a single acting class in his senior year at San Francisco State University, having attended UC Berkeley prior to that. Following graduation, he worked as a prison AIDS educator in California and Hawaii before co-founding a theatre company in San Francisco with friends. In 1994, he traveled to the United Kingdom to attend drama school.
Dhillon is perhaps best known internationally for his role as consultant Michael Spence in the British medical drama Holby City. He first appeared on the series in 2001 as recurring minor character Dr. Sunil Gupta, then returned in November 2007 in the more prominent role of Michael Spence. On December 17, 2013, his character departed after being forced out of his post by new CEO Guy Self, played by John Michie. An announcement on June 19, 2014 confirmed Dhillon would return to the series for a short stint later that year. During the same period, he also appeared alongside Amanda Mealing on the British medical drama Casualty. His name has appeared in various spellings across credits, including Hari Dillon and Harry Dillon.
His American television appearances include Medium, Charmed, Without a Trace, The Loop, and Law and Order: Special Victims Unit. On film, he has appeared in Entrapment, New World Disorder, Wit, Cradle 2 the Grave, Bad Education, Doom: Annihilation, The Beanie Bubble, We Strangers, and Trigger Warning, among others. His roles in Cradle 2 the Grave, Wit, and Entrapment were minor and unnamed.
Dhillon's stage work spans productions in London, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. His theatre credits include Mother Teresa Is Dead at the Royal Court Theatre in London in 2002, the original production of Stephen Belber's Drifting Elegant at San Francisco's Magic Theatre in 2004, Charles L. Mee's A Perfect Wedding at the Kirk Douglas Theatre in Los Angeles in 2004, which was that venue's inaugural production, and Morbidity and Mortality at the Magic Theatre in 2006. In 2014, Dhillon made his Broadway debut in Ayad Akhtar's Disgraced. That production is among the Broadway credits associated with the Tony Award for Best Musical in 2024.
Dhillon was included on the long-list for the 2010 National Television Awards in the category for Best Drama Performance.
