About
Hardee Kirkland (May 23, 1868 – February 18, 1929) was an American stage and screen performer whose career spanned Broadway, silent film acting, and film direction. Born in Savannah, Georgia, he came from a family with prominent military ties to the Confederacy. His father was former Confederate Brigadier General William Whedbee Kirkland, and his maternal uncle, William J. Hardee, also held the rank of Confederate general. Kirkland was the elder brother of actress Elizabeth Kirkland, who performed professionally under the name Odette Tyler.
His Broadway career extended from 1903 to 1917 and encompassed a range of productions across different genres. His stage credits included Hamilton, Innocent, the farce Miss Patsy, Mary Jane's Pa, and The Devil to Pay, among other productions.
Kirkland also established a substantial presence in the silent film industry. Between 1912 and 1914 he directed more than 30 films, and he subsequently appeared as an actor in more than 40 films between 1915 and 1925. His work in both capacities made him a notable figure in early American cinema.
Kirkland died in Los Angeles, California, on February 18, 1929, at the age of 60.
