Hans Jaray

Hans Jaray (1906–1990) was an Austrian actor and playwright who built a career spanning stage, film, and television across multiple decades and countries. Born in Austria, he established himself as a leading man in European cinema during the 1930s before emigrating to the United States following the Anschluss of 1938.

Jaray's film career began in the silent era, with an appearance in Sons in Law (1926), followed by The Love of Jeanne Ney (1927). As sound cinema took hold, he continued working steadily, appearing in The Beggar Student (1931) and The Emperor's Sweetheart (1931). Among his most prominent screen roles was the lead in the 1933 Schubert biopic Gently My Songs Entreat. He remained active in European film production throughout the mid-1930s, with credits including Peter (1934), Unfinished Symphony (1934), Ball at the Savoy (1935), Her Highness Dances the Waltz (1935), The Affairs of Maupassant (1936), Fräulein Lilli (1936), and The Priest from Kirchfeld (1937). His work extended beyond acting to playwriting as well; the 1934 Czech film Man in Demand on All Sides was adapted from one of his original plays.

Following his emigration to the United States, Jaray appeared on Broadway in 1940 in Another Sun. He continued working in American film during this period, with screen credits including Lydia (1941) and Carnegie Hall (1947). After the Second World War, he returned to Vienna. His later career included the Austrian film Voices of Spring (1952) and work as a writer and director of television films. In one of his final screen appearances, he took a role in the 1977 West German television series Uncle Silas.
