Hamilton Revelle

Hamilton Revelle, born Arthur Lloyd Hamilton Engstrom on 31 May 1867 at Moorish Castle in Gibraltar, was a British stage and silent screen actor whose Broadway career spanned from 1899 to 1921. His father, George Lloyd Engström, served as an officer in the Royal Horse Artillery, and his mother was Louisa Maria Revell. Revelle took a form of his mother's surname as his professional name.

Among the most notable episodes of Revelle's career was his arrest on 5 March 1900, alongside his co-star Olga Nethersole, in connection with their performance in the play Sapho. New York Police padlocked the theatre, deeming the production salacious for its portrayal of a woman engaged in love affairs outside of marriage. Two other plays, The Second Mrs. Tanqueray and The Profligate, were staged in place of Sapho during the legal proceedings. The trial began on 3 April 1900, and both Nethersole and Revelle were acquitted on 7 April, after which the production was permitted to resume. The following year, Revelle appeared alongside Mrs. Leslie Carter in Du Barry.

His Broadway credits encompassed a range of productions across more than two decades, including Kismet, Fair and Warmer, Secret Strings, Mis' Nelly of N'Orleans, and Captain Applejack. In addition to his stage work, Revelle also pursued a career in silent film. He died on 11 April 1958.
