Hobbes began his acting career in 1898 as a member of Frank Benson's company, making his stage debut in the role of Tybalt in Romeo and Juliet. He went on to appear at the Lyceum Theatre in London, playing Prince Michael in The Prince and the Beggar Maid in both 1908 and 1910. His Broadway career spanned from 1906 to 1955, encompassing productions that included The Silver Box, Slaves All, Caste, and The Swan, among others.
