About
Barbara Hallie Foote was born on March 31, 1950, in Manhattan, the daughter of playwright and director Horton Foote and Lillian Vallish Foote. She grew up in Nyack, New York and New Hampshire, and is the sister of playwright and screenwriter Daisy Foote.
Foote launched her stage career in 1982 with her Broadway debut in A Little Family Business, a production starring Angela Lansbury in which Foote played the role of Sophia and also understudied two additional roles. Her Broadway work continued through 2008, with credits that include Dividing the Estate. Her stage career has been closely intertwined with the work of her father, and the two collaborated on numerous productions over the decades, among them Talking Pictures, Night Seasons, Laura Dennis, When They Speak of Rita, The Last of the Thorntons, The Carpetbagger's Children, The Day Emily Married, The Trip to Bountiful, and Dividing the Estate.
Her off-Broadway work has been equally substantial. In 1986, she originated the title role in her father's The Widow Claire, a production that also featured Matthew Broderick, Dan Butler, and Sarah Michelle Gellar. Her performance in The Trip to Bountiful earned her the Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Featured Actress and a nomination for the Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Featured Actress in a Play. For Dividing the Estate, she received the 2008 Richard Seff Award and a 2009 Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Play. In 2009, she appeared in The Orphans' Home Cycle off-Broadway, earning an additional Outer Critics Circle Award nomination in the same category. In 2012, she took on the roles of Dolores and Mrs. Crawford in Harrison, TX: Three Plays by Horton Foote with Primary Stages, and subsequently appeared as Pauline in the Primary Stages production of Him. Foote also received a Tony Award nomination for Best Revival of a Play in 2013.
Among her other honors, Foote won the Obie Award in 1993, the Drama League Award in both 2000 and 2002, and received a 1995 Drama Desk Award nomination for Outstanding Featured Actress in a Play for The Horton Foote Plays. Outside of New York, she played Rosalynn Carter in the 2014 Arena Stage production of Camp David, a performance attended by both Rosalynn Carter and President Jimmy Carter. She was performing in the Hartford Stage production of her father's theatrical adaptation of Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird at the time of his death.
Foote's screen work has included small film roles in C.H.U.D., Walking to the Waterline, Friends with Money, and Paranormal Activity 3. Her television credits include appearances on Miami Vice, Murder, She Wrote, and Law & Order, as well as the television films The Habitation of Dragons and Alone, both written by her father.
