About
H. Reeves-Smith (17 May 1862 – 29 January 1938) was an English-born stage actor whose Broadway career spanned from 1898 to 1935. His father, G. Reeves-Smith, managed the Brighton Aquarium. Reeves-Smith made his stage debut in 1878 at Halifax in Jane Shore, and by 1887 had relocated to the United States, where he initially toured with John Sleeper Clarke.
Once established in America, Reeves-Smith toured alongside actresses Henrietta Crosman and Grace George before building a substantial presence on Broadway. Among his early notable roles was Robert Jinks in Clyde Fitch's Captain Jinks of the Horse Marines in 1901, the production in which Ethel Barrymore rose to stardom. Two years later, Reeves-Smith appeared at the Comedy Theatre in London's West End, taking the role of Edward Warden in another Fitch play, The Climbers. He reunited with Barrymore in 1910 in Mid-Channel, a play centered on a feuding couple. In 1912, he appeared opposite Laurette Taylor in Peg o' My Heart, and in 1915 he was part of the cast of The Unchastened Woman, which starred Emily Stevens.
His Broadway credits also included A Brace of Partridges, in which he starred, as well as The High Road and The Vinegar Tree. Reeves-Smith closed his Broadway career at the age of 73 playing Johan Strauss in the musical The Great Waltz in 1935.
Beyond the stage, Reeves-Smith appeared in three motion pictures — two silent films and one sound production. His final film role was in The Return of Sherlock Holmes in 1929 alongside Clive Brook, a production recognized as the first Sherlock Holmes film shot in sound, making Reeves-Smith the first actor to portray Dr. Watson in a sound film.
Following his retirement from performing, Reeves-Smith returned to England, where he died of a heart attack on 29 January 1938 at Ewell, Surrey.
