About

Gwen Lucy Ffrangcon-Davies was a British actress born in London on 25 January 1891 to opera baritone David Ffrangcon-Davies and Annie Francis Rayner. The family surname derives from a valley in Snowdonia, reflecting her Welsh heritage. Ffrangcon-Davies worked across theatre, television, radio, and film over the course of a career that spanned eight decades, and she made her final acting appearance at the age of 100. She died on 27 January 1992, two days after her 101st birthday.

Ffrangcon-Davies made her stage debut in 1911 as both a singer and an actress, receiving encouragement early in her career from Ellen Terry. In 1924 she played Juliet opposite John Gielgud's Romeo, a performance that established a lasting professional bond between the two. Gielgud later cast her as Queen Anne in his 1934 production of Richard of Bordeaux. The following year, in 1925, she took on the role of Tess in a stage adaptation of Tess of the d'Urbervilles, which included a special performance for the novel's author, Thomas Hardy. In 1938 she appeared alongside Ivor Novello in a production of Henry V at Drury Lane, and later that same year originated the role of Mrs. Manningham in the world premiere of Patrick Hamilton's Gaslight. In 1942 she played Lady Macbeth for nearly a full year opposite Gielgud's Macbeth.

Ffrangcon-Davies won the Evening Standard Award in 1958 for her portrayal of Mary Tyrone in Long Day's Journey Into Night, a role she described as her favourite. She reprised the role in 1960 at the Crest Theatre in Toronto, Canada, where the theatre received permission to stage the play only on the condition that she perform the part of the mother. During that same Toronto engagement she also presented an evening of poetry readings and character studies of Shakespearean heroines, including Lady Macbeth, Catherine of Aragon, and Portia.

In 1963, Ffrangcon-Davies appeared in The School for Scandal alongside Gielgud, Ralph Richardson, Muriel Forbes, Richard Easton, and Laurence Naismith. The production originated in London before touring to New York, constituting her Broadway appearance, and subsequently to Toronto's O'Keefe Centre. Ffrangcon-Davies retired from the stage in 1970, though she continued working in radio and television. On Christmas Day 1990, a month before her 99th birthday, she appeared on the BBC radio programme With Great Pleasure, in which she selected favourite readings performed by herself, Anna Massey, and Alec McCowen; the broadcast was later included in a 1992 compilation cassette. In the 1980s she appeared on the Wogan chat show, where she recited the death scene of Juliet from memory. Her film credits included The Witches and The Devil Rides Out, both produced by Hammer Films in the late 1960s.

Her final acting role was the Dowager in the Sherlock Holmes television episode The Master Blackmailer, filmed when she was 100 years old. The performance earned her a listing in The Guinness Book of Records under the category of Oldest Performer in the United Kingdom. In 1991, also at the age of 100, Ffrangcon-Davies was appointed a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire, making her the oldest person ever to receive that honour at the time, a distinction she held until Olivia de Havilland was appointed in 2017. For many years her partner was South African actress Marda Vanne, and she lived in the village of Stambourne in Essex, England. Ffrangcon-Davies made two appearances on Desert Island Discs, broadcast on 8 October 1962 and 19 June 1988 respectively.
