About
Guy Duncan Kingsford (September 30, 1911 – November 9, 1986) was an English-born American actor whose career spanned film, television, radio, and the stage. Born in Redhill, Surrey, England, he was the son of British actor Walter Kingsford, who relocated with his family to New York City.
Kingsford made his Broadway appearance in 1938 in Once is Enough. That same year, while traveling with a touring company in Berlin, Germany, he was approached by a representative of the Reich Film Chamber, who sought to recruit him for a propaganda film. The role would have required him to portray a character who betrayed United States military secrets to the German High Command. He was offered $3,000 upfront and $15,000 upon the film's completion. Kingsford responded by asking the recruiter whether the American Embassy had been consulted before American actors were solicited for the project, after which the recruiter departed and made no further contact.
During World War II, Kingsford served in the United States Army and participated in a vaudeville-style variety show at Camp Sibert alongside other enlisted entertainment professionals. In 1943, he co-starred in Silk Hat Harry at the Music Box Theater in Los Angeles. That same year, while filming Sahara, he narrowly avoided injury from a bayonet, protected by a package of war bonds he was carrying in his shirt pocket.
His film work began in the mid-1930s, with a role as a taxi driver in The Headline Woman (1935), followed by Happy Go Lucky (1936). His subsequent screen credits include Escort Girl (1941), That Hamilton Woman (1941), Sahara (1943), Paris After Dark (1943), The Phantom (1943), The Lone Wolf in London (1947), Elephant Stampede (1951), Fort Vengeance (1953), Salome (1953), in which he played a Roman soldier, Moonfleet (1955), The Night Holds Terror (1955), Teen-Age Crime Wave (1955), Inside Detroit (1956), The Decks Ran Red (1958), and Highway Patrol (1955). In the 1940s he also worked as a voice actor on Lux Radio Theater broadcasts.
Outside of his professional life, Kingsford co-owned a home along the Saar River in Luxembourg with his sister. He retired from acting in 1960 and died in Encino, California, on November 9, 1986.
