About
Gustav Luders was a German-born American composer, music arranger, and conductor who worked primarily in operetta and musical comedy. He was born Gustav Carl Luders on December 13, 1865, in Bremen, Germany, and received his musical training there before emigrating to the United States in 1888. He initially settled in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where he worked as an orchestra conductor and directed a light opera company.
In 1889, Luders joined M. Witmark & Sons as a music arranger. He subsequently relocated to Chicago, where he conducted pit orchestras in various theaters. His compositional style drew heavily from the work of Arthur Sullivan and from the Viennese operetta tradition. Many of his stage works received their premieres in Chicago before transferring to Broadway.
His most frequent collaborator was the librettist Frank S. Pixley, and their most celebrated joint work was The Prince of Pilsen, which was staged repeatedly across the United States and abroad well into the 1950s and was later adapted into a film. Among the other works Luders produced with Pixley were The Burgomaster, which dates to 1900, and King Dodo, from 1901. Luders also collaborated with writer George Ade on The Sho-Gun in 1904, the same year Woodland was produced.
His Broadway credits as composer and book writer span multiple productions, including A Society Circus, The Burgomaster, The Fair Co-ed, Gypsy, and The Grand Mogul, as well as Marcelle, which appeared in 1908. Additional works associated with Luders include Mam'selle Napoleon, Somewhere Else, and By the Sad Sea Waves. Several of his compositions are held in the Lester S. Levy Sheet Music Collection at Johns Hopkins University.
Luders died in New York City on January 24, 1913.
