About
Gugu Mbatha-Raw, born Gugulethu Sophia Mbatha-Raw on 21 April 1983 in Oxford, England, is an English actress whose work spans stage, television, and film. Her first name derives from the isiZulu phrase igugu lethu, meaning "our treasure." She is the daughter of Patrick Mbatha, a South African doctor who was a member of the African National Congress and fled South Africa due to his activism against apartheid, and Anne Raw, an English nurse. Her parents separated when she was one year old, and she was raised primarily by her mother in Witney, Oxfordshire, where she attended The Henry Box School. From an early age she pursued acting, dance, and musical theatre, training at the Judy Tompsett School of Dance and participating in the National Youth Theatre. In 2001 she relocated to London to study at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.
Mbatha-Raw's early stage work brought her significant recognition. In 2005 she appeared at the Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester, first as Octavia in Antony and Cleopatra and later as Juliet in Romeo and Juliet, the latter opposite Andrew Garfield. Her performance as Juliet earned her a Best Actress nomination from the Manchester Evening News Theatre Awards. She made her West End and Broadway debut in 2009, playing Ophelia in Hamlet alongside Jude Law as Prince Hamlet. The production marked her sole Broadway credit to date. In 2015 she returned to the stage at Shakespeare's Globe, portraying the title character in Jessica Swale's play Nell Gwynn, which ran from 19 September to 17 October 2015 and earned her an Evening Standard Theatre Award nomination for Best Actress.
Her television career began with minor appearances on Bad Girls in 2006 and Marple in 2007 before she took on a recurring role in Doctor Who in 2007, playing Tish Jones, the sister of companion Martha Jones, across four episodes including "The Lazarus Experiment." Director J. J. Abrams, having seen her in Hamlet, cast her in his 2010 NBC series Undercovers, which was cancelled after thirteen episodes. In 2011 she joined the Fox series Touch as the female lead opposite Kiefer Sutherland. Later television work included a leading role in the Black Mirror episode "San Junipero" in 2016, a role in The Morning Show beginning in 2019, and the recurring part of Judge Ravonna Renslayer in the Disney+ series Loki in 2021 and 2023. Beginning in 2022 she starred in and served as executive producer on the Apple TV+ psychological thriller series Surface.
On screen, Mbatha-Raw earned considerable acclaim for her leading film roles. She portrayed Dido Elizabeth Belle in the 2013 period drama Belle, winning Best Actress at the British Independent Film Awards and receiving a Satellite Award nomination for Best Actress in the same category. The following year she starred in the romantic drama Beyond the Lights, earning a Best Actress nomination at the 2014 Gotham Awards. Her subsequent film credits include supporting roles in Miss Sloane and Beauty and the Beast, both in 2016 and 2017 respectively, A Wrinkle in Time directed by Ava DuVernay in 2018, Motherless Brooklyn in 2019, and Misbehaviour in 2020. She also appeared in Free State of Jones in 2016, playing Rachel, the common-law wife of farmer Newton Knight. In 2024 she starred opposite Kevin Hart in the Netflix action film Lift.
In 2017 Mbatha-Raw was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II for services to drama. In February 2021 she was named a global Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. In that capacity she has visited Burundian and Congolese refugees in Rwanda and Uganda and participated in the UNHCR's EveryOneCounts and Films of Hope campaigns. She also served as one of the announcers for the Refugee Paralympic team in 2021.
