About
Gregory Martin Itzin (April 20, 1948 – July 8, 2022) was an American actor born in Washington, D.C., the son of Evelyn Loretta (née Smith) and Martin Joseph Itzin. During his sixth-grade year, his family relocated to Burlington, Wisconsin, where his father served as mayor. Itzin pursued formal actor training at the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco, with the stage as his original professional ambition. He went on to perform in theatrical venues throughout the country before building an extensive career in film and television.
On Broadway, Itzin appeared in productions between 1993 and 2010, most notably starring in The Kentucky Cycle, the Pulitzer Prize-winning play for which he earned both a Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actor in a Play and a Drama Desk Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Play, both in 1994. His work in that production spanned multiple prestigious venues, including the world premiere at the Intiman Theatre, as well as runs at the Mark Taper Forum and the Kennedy Center before reaching Broadway. He also appeared on Broadway in Enron. In Los Angeles, Itzin was a member of the Matrix Theatre Company, where his performances in Waiting for Godot, The Homecoming, and The Birthday Party each earned him an L.A. Drama Critics Circle Award. He originated the role of Louis de Rougemont in the world premiere of Donald Margulies' Shipwrecked! An Entertainment at South Coast Repertory, a production later revived at the Geffen Playhouse. In 2010, he played the Earl of Kent in the Antaeus Company's production of King Lear, a performance that brought him another L.A. Drama Critics Circle Award. That same year he appeared in the Hollywood Theater of the Ear's audio production of Saint Joan as the Archbishop.
Itzin made his first television appearance as a contestant on Whew! in 1979 and subsequently accumulated guest and recurring roles across decades of American television. He made his first Star Trek appearance in 1993 in the Deep Space Nine episode "Dax" and returned to the franchise multiple times, ultimately playing five distinct roles across the various series, including Doctor Dysek in Star Trek: Voyager and Admiral Black in Star Trek: Enterprise. He held recurring roles on Friends as Theodore Hannigan, the father of Mike Hannigan, as well as on Murder One, NCIS, and The Mentalist, where he played the head of the unit for 13 episodes. He also portrayed John Ashcroft in the 2003 television movie DC 9/11: Time of Crisis and appeared in a guest role on the Disney Channel series Hannah Montana.
Itzin is perhaps best known for his television work on the action thriller series 24, which he joined midway through its fourth season in 2005 in the recurring role of Vice President Charles Logan. The character was elevated to President in the following season and became a central figure in the storyline. For this performance, Itzin received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. He returned to the show for four episodes in its sixth season and again during its eighth season, earning a second Emmy nomination, this time for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series. He had a recurring role in seasons one through four of USA Network's Covert Affairs.
In film, Itzin appeared as a Mint Hotel clerk in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, played a psychiatrist in I Know Who Killed Me, and portrayed a prison warden in Law Abiding Citizen. His final film role was as James Bond — the ornithologist, not the fictional spy — in the 2022 British documentary The Other Fellow. Itzin married his wife, Judie, in 1979, and the couple had two children. He suffered a major heart attack in 2015 but continued his acting career. He died on July 8, 2022, at the age of 74, from complications during emergency surgery.
