About

Gregory Grene is an American actor, musician, and educator who grew up in Chicago and County Cavan, Ireland. He is the son of classicist David Grene. His career has spanned Broadway performance, music production, advertising, and teaching.

Grene appeared on Broadway in 1994 in Philadelphia, Here I Come!, and prior to his musical work also performed in regional theater and independent film.

As a musician, Grene fronts the band The Prodigals, whose sound combines Irish traditional music with rock influences. He has written, produced, and recorded nine albums with the group, along with a solo album titled FlipSides, released in 2008. That record featured contributions from John Doyle, formerly a guitarist with Solas, and Tony Cedras, a multi-instrumentalist who has performed with Paul Simon since the Graceland tour. Grene's music was included in the Rough Guide to Irish Music compilation and appeared on the soundtrack for Pride and Glory, a film starring Ed Norton, Colin Farrell, Jon Voight, and Noah Emmerich. His work has also been featured on the ABC series Mercy and the FX series It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

Grene previously served as Director of Music for the New York advertising agency FCB, a role in which he recorded material ranging from reggae sessions in Kingston to Beatles tracks and symphonic recordings at Abbey Road. He has spoken on music industry panels for Shoot and Billboard in New York and Las Vegas. He currently teaches English literature at Greenwich Country Day School in Connecticut.

Grene's twin brother, Andrew Grene, died in the 2010 Haiti earthquake while working for the United Nations. Grene serves as US Director of the Andrew Grene Foundation, a 501(c)3 public charity established in his brother's name that focuses on education and microfinance in Haiti.
