About
Gregg Sherwood, born Dora Mae Fjelstad on October 21, 1923, in New York City, was an American actress, model, and socialite who died on May 27, 2011. At the age of three, she relocated with her mother to Beloit, Wisconsin, before eventually returning to New York, where she enrolled in a modeling school in the early 1940s and began competing in beauty pageants.
Sherwood pursued a career in entertainment across multiple platforms during the late 1940s and 1950s. She worked as a chorus girl and appeared on Broadway in 1948, with her verified stage credits including As the Girls Go. Alongside her theatrical work, she maintained a presence in print media, appearing in advertisements, on the cover of TV Guide, and as the subject of a cover story in Wink, a pinup magazine. In 1950, she was named Queen of the North Carolina Azalea Festival. She also took on minor film roles between 1948 and 1953.
Having been divorced twice previously, Sherwood married Horace Dodge Jr., an heir to the Dodge automotive family fortune, in 1953. The marriage was marked by considerable extravagance, and in 1961 Horace Dodge initiated divorce proceedings, citing the cost of the lifestyle. The divorce had not been finalized when Horace Dodge died in 1963, and Sherwood inherited $11 million. She subsequently pursued legal action against her former mother-in-law and was awarded an additional $9 million.
In 1965, Sherwood married a 27-year-old former policeman. Her fortune diminished over the following years, and she filed for bankruptcy in 1978. She also pleaded guilty to charges of embezzling from her son's trust fund. Sherwood spent her final years in Palm Beach, Florida, and was buried at Our Lady Queen of Peace Cemetery in Royal Palm Beach, Florida.
