About
Greg Morrison is a Canadian composer and writer whose Broadway work includes The Drowsy Chaperone, for which he shares composer and lyricist credit with his songwriting partner Lisa Lambert. The show earned Morrison a Tony Award for Best Original Score in 2006, along with Drama Desk Awards for Outstanding Music and Outstanding Lyrics the same year. The Drowsy Chaperone also received a Tony nomination for Best Musical.
The origins of The Drowsy Chaperone trace back to 1999, when Lambert approached Morrison about creating a musical to be performed at the wedding stag party of their friends Bob Martin and Janet Van De Graaff. Filmmaker Don McKellar was also part of that original writing team. The show subsequently received an expanded production at the Toronto Fringe Festival, where Martin joined as a co-writer and performer, marking the first collaboration between Morrison and Lambert.
Morrison's theatrical training began at Humber College in Toronto, where he completed the Jazz program. He launched his theatre career as musical director for the national touring company of The Second City in Toronto, and also served as musical director for The Second City Alumni Cafe at the Tim Sims Playhouse and for The Chumps and The Muckrakers on CBC Radio. Alongside his work with The Second City, Morrison composed and provided musical direction for a range of Toronto-based artists, including playwright Karen Hines, horror clown duo Mump and Smoot, and theatre artist Linda Griffiths.
His compositional credits for the stage extend across numerous productions. As composer and lyricist, his work includes Hello...Hello at Tarragon Theatre, Pochsy Unplugged, which premiered at the Toronto Fringe and toured in Canada and the United States, Mump and Smoot in Something Else, produced by Canadian Stage and Yale Repertory Theatre, Mump and Smoot in Flux for Canadian Stage, An Awkward Evening With Martin and Johnson at the Tim Sims Playhouse, The Age of Dorian at Artword Theatre, Pochsy's Lips, Oh, Baby, and Citizen Pochsy.
Morrison has also written songs for television, with credits that include Slings & Arrows and Sensitive Skin, both produced by Rhombus Media, and Getting Along Famously for CBC. His additional honors include a Canadian Comedy Award, a Sterling Award for Original Composition, and a Cream of Comedy Award. He continues to write for both theatre and screen.
