About
Gregory Buck Kinnear was born on June 17, 1963, in Logansport, Indiana, to Suzanne Buck, a homemaker, and Edward Kinnear, a career diplomat employed by the U.S. State Department. He has two older brothers, James and Steven. Of Scots-Irish descent, Kinnear spent much of his childhood moving between postings abroad, including Beirut and Athens, where his father's diplomatic career took the family. While attending the American Community Schools in Athens, he hosted a radio program called School Daze With Greg Kinnear, an early foray into broadcasting. He returned to the United States for university, earning a degree in broadcast journalism from the University of Arizona in 1985, where he was a member of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity.
Kinnear launched his professional career in television, hosting the short-lived game show College Mad House before becoming the creator, co-executive producer, and host of The Best of the Worst, which aired from 1991 to 1992. In 1991, he became the first host of Talk Soup, a position he held until 1995, when he transitioned to the NBC late-night program Later with Greg Kinnear. His film debut came with Blankman, after which he was cast as David Larrabee in Sydney Pollack's 1995 remake of Sabrina. He played the lead in the 1996 comedy Dear God before landing the role in James L. Brooks' As Good as It Gets in 1997, which earned him a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.
Subsequent film work included You've Got Mail, Nurse Betty, Someone Like You, and the 2002 films We Were Soldiers, in which he portrayed Major Bruce P. Crandall, and Auto Focus, in which he played actor Bob Crane. In 2003, he starred alongside Matt Damon in Stuck on You, and in 2005 he voiced Phineas T. Ratchet in the animated film Robots and appeared in The Matador with Pierce Brosnan. Kinnear co-starred with Steve Carell in the Oscar-winning Little Miss Sunshine in 2006 and with Mark Wahlberg in Invincible the same year. Later credits include Flash of Genius, The Last Song, and Heaven Is for Real. In 2020, he appeared in Misbehaviour.
On television, Kinnear portrayed John F. Kennedy in the 2011 miniseries The Kennedys, which was originally planned for the History Channel before being picked up by ReelzChannel and premiering on April 3, 2011. He played Joe Biden in the 2016 television film Confirmation. His other television credits include Friends, Modern Family, House of Cards, Rake, and the 2020 miniseries The Stand. Netflix announced in March 2023 that Kinnear would guest star in Part 2 of Season 4 of You, playing Tom Lockwood.
Kinnear made his Broadway debut in 2018, appearing in To Kill a Mockingbird. On May 1, 1999, he married Helen Labdon, a retired British glamour model. The couple has three daughters.
