About

Greg Germann (born Gregory Andrew Germann on February 26, 1958, in Houston, Texas) is an American actor whose career has spanned stage, film, and television across four decades. He is perhaps best recognized for his portrayal of attorney Richard Fish on the legal-comedy series Ally McBeal, a role he held for five seasons from 1997 to 2002 and for which he received three Screen Actors Guild nominations, winning once.

Germann began his career on the New York stage in the early 1980s. In 1982, he appeared alongside Matthew Broderick in Fancy This, a play he also co-wrote. That same year he took on a role in Chicago, followed by a role in The Wizard of Oz in 1983. In 1990, he originated the role of John Hinckley Jr. in Stephen Sondheim's Assassins. He returned to Broadway in 2008, appearing in Boeing-Boeing.

His transition to film came after he spotted a casting notice in 1985 and relocated to Hollywood. His screen debut followed in the 1986 teen comedy The Whoopee Boys. He subsequently appeared in Child's Play 2 in 1990, playing the character Mattson, and in the 1991 romantic comedy Once Around. He gained further visibility with a role in the 1994 thriller Clear and Present Danger, playing a character named Petey.

Television became the primary vehicle for Germann's wider recognition. Before Ally McBeal, he played Eric "Rico" Morrow on the sitcom Ned & Stacey from 1995 to 1997. During his run on Ally McBeal, he also directed several episodes of the series, including "Fear of Flirting," the fourth episode of season five. Following the show's conclusion in 2002, he appeared in multiple films released in 2001, including Down to Earth, Sweet November, and Joe Somebody. He later guest-starred on Desperate Housewives in 2006 and appeared in the pilot episode of Eureka, though he did not continue in the series.

In 2009, Germann starred in the Nickelodeon television film Spectacular!, portraying Mr. Virgil Romano, and made a guest appearance on CSI: NY as Victor Benton. He subsequently appeared in the holiday film The Santa Incident in 2010, playing Jerry Erickson. He has recurred on NCIS as NCIS Assistant Director Jerome Craig, first appearing in the season ten episode "Shiva," and has appeared periodically on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit as ADA Derek Strauss. In 2016, he joined the ABC fantasy drama Once Upon a Time for ten episodes in season five, portraying Hades, the God of the Underworld. He also appeared as neurosurgeon Tom Koracick in Grey's Anatomy.

Germann has a son, Asa Germann, with actress Christine Mourad. Asa Germann is also an actor.
