About
Gregory Ralph Evigan was born on October 14, 1953, in South Amboy, New Jersey, to Ralph Milan Evigan, an electrician, and Barbara Elizabeth Evigan, a homemaker. He grew up in Sayreville, New Jersey, where he attended Sayreville War Memorial High School, graduating in 1971. From the age of eight, Evigan received classical training in piano and went on to play the organ and saxophone, also performing in rock bands during his teenage years. In 2007, his alma mater inducted him into its Alumni Hall of Fame for his contributions to the arts.
Evigan launched his professional career immediately after high school, joining the Broadway production of Jesus Christ Superstar in 1971 in replacement ensemble roles and also performing in the show's touring production. He then took on the lead role of Danny Zuko in the Broadway production of Grease, a run that lasted from 1972 to 1973. He reprised the Danny Zuko role during the production's Chicago residency, appearing alongside Marilu Henner.
After relocating to Los Angeles, Evigan made his feature film debut in the exploitation film Scorchy (1976), starring Connie Stevens. Two years later he was cast as Billie Joe "B.J." McKay, a truck driver whose closest companion was a chimpanzee named Bear, in the NBC comedy series B.J. and the Bear, a role he held from 1979 to 1981. He had married dancer Pamela C. Serpe on June 3, 1979, and the couple went on to have three children: daughter Vanessa, born 1981; son Jason, born 1983; and daughter Briana, born 1986. Jason became a musician and former frontman of the Los Angeles-based band After Midnight Project, while both Vanessa and Briana pursued acting careers.
Throughout the 1980s, Evigan maintained a steady television presence, with recurring guest appearances on Masquerade in 1984 and Murder, She Wrote in 1986. He then starred as Joey Harris in the comedy series My Two Dads from 1987 to 1990, portraying a man who co-parents the daughter of his deceased girlfriend alongside her former boyfriend. In 1989, he appeared in the science fiction film DeepStar Six.
Evigan subsequently starred opposite William Shatner in the science fiction series TekWar, which was based on a series of books by Shatner. The property began as a series of two-hour television movies in 1994 before transitioning to hour-long episodes that aired from 1995 to 1996. He then took on the recurring role of Dr. Dan Hathaway on the soap opera Melrose Place between 1996 and 1997, followed by a main role on the soap opera Pacific Palisades in 1997, in which his character was among a group of friends who relocate from the Midwest to California. That same year he also guest-starred on 7th Heaven.
His film work in the late 1990s and 2000s included the drama Mel (1998), directed by Joey Travolta in his directorial debut, and the psychological thriller Spirit (2001), in which Evigan played the father of a teenage girl who believes their home is haunted, opposite Elisabeth Moss. He reteamed with Travolta on the family drama Arizona Summer (2004) and subsequently appeared in River's End (2005). Evigan also appeared in the Western film 6 Guns (2010). From 2001 to 2002, he starred in the Canadian series Big Sound, portraying a record executive.
Evigan returned to the stage in 2008, playing Gar in a theatrical adaptation of Mask at the Pasadena Playhouse. In 2015, he appeared in the Hallmark Channel film Once Upon a Holiday alongside his daughter Briana. He guest-starred on the crime series Bones in 2017 and then took on a multi-episode arc as Jim Harvey on the soap opera General Hospital in 2018.
