About

Graham Powley Jarvis (August 25, 1930 – April 16, 2003) was a Canadian character actor born in Toronto, Ontario, whose career spanned Broadway, film, and television from the late 1950s through the early 2000s. His father, William Henry Reginald Jarvis, was an investment banker and president of John Labatt Ltd. On his mother's side, Jarvis descended from businessman and brewer John Labatt, whose own father was Labatt founder John Kinder Labatt. His mother was Margaret Biddulph (Scratcherd) Jarvis.

Jarvis maintained an active stage career in New York between 1957 and 1975, appearing in productions including Incident at Vichy, Tartuffe, The Investigation, Halfway Up the Tree, and The Rocky Horror Show, among others. His screen work ran concurrently and extended well beyond his Broadway years, establishing him as a recognizable presence in American film and television.

Among his most prominent television roles was Charlie "Baby Boy" Haggers in the soap opera parody Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman, the considerably older husband of aspiring country music singer Loretta Haggers, portrayed by Mary Kay Place. His television appearances across several decades included Naked City, Route 66, N.Y.P.D., All in the Family, M*A*S*H, The Bob Newhart Show, The Odd Couple, Starsky and Hutch, Hart to Hart, Cagney and Lacey, Mork and Mindy, Mama's Family, Fame, Married with Children, Murder She Wrote, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Get a Life, The X-Files, ER, Home Improvement, and Six Feet Under. His final recurring role was Charles Jackson on the WB drama 7th Heaven, a part he held until his death.

In film, Jarvis took on character roles including Amos Bush, the leader of the ultra-conservative Christopher Mott Society — a group inspired by the John Birch Society — in Cold Turkey. He also portrayed Elliot Sinclair in The Journeyman Project trilogy of video games and served as narrator in the first American production of The Rocky Horror Show at the Roxy Theatre in Los Angeles, a production that featured Tim Curry.

Jarvis lived in Los Angeles with his wife Joanna and their two sons, Lex and Matt. He died on April 16, 2003, from multiple myeloma and was interred at Pierce Brothers Valley Oaks Memorial Park in Westlake Village, California.
