About
Grace Jane Gummer, now known professionally as Grace Gummer Ronson, was born on May 9, 1986, in New York City, to actress Meryl Streep and sculptor Don Gummer. She grew up in Los Angeles and Connecticut alongside her siblings: musician Henry Wolfe Gummer, actress Mamie Gummer, and actress and model Louisa Jacobson. Gummer attended Poly Prep for high school before enrolling at Vassar College, her mother's alma mater, where she earned a degree in art history and Italian in 2008. During her time at Vassar, she participated in the collaborative theater group Woodshed Theater Ensemble and spent a year studying abroad in Bologna, Italy. She worked as a docent at Dia:Beacon, assisted costume designer Ann Roth, and worked at the Tirelli Costumi costume shop in Rome. She later interned in the design department of fashion designer Zac Posen.
Gummer's earliest screen appearance came in the 1993 film The House of the Spirits, in which she was billed as Jane Grey and played the younger version of her mother's character, Clara del Valle. After graduating college, she took on her next professional acting role in 2008, starring in the Off-Off-Broadway production of Lukas Bärfuss's The Sexual Neuroses of Our Parents, a role she came to after originally being asked to assist with costume design. From 2010 to 2011, she starred as Anna Moore on the TeenNick series Gigantic, which premiered on October 8, 2010. Her film work during this period included Meskada, in which she played Nat Collins, and Bashert, in which she played Abby opposite Paulo Costanzo, both in 2010. In December 2010, she played Hero in a Los Angeles production of Much Ado About Nothing opposite Helen Hunt. She also appeared in a small role in the 2010 Tom Hanks-directed film Larry Crowne alongside Julia Roberts and Rami Malek.
Gummer made her Broadway debut in the spring of 2011, playing Chloë Coverly in the revival of Tom Stoppard's Arcadia at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre in New York. The role earned her a Theatre World Award in 2011. The following year, she returned to Broadway in The Columnist, appearing opposite John Lithgow. These two productions represent her complete Broadway credits, spanning 2011 to 2012.
On television, Gummer appeared as Katie Rand in the March 26, 2012, episode of NBC's Smash, titled "The Coup," in which her character attempts to reconcile her divorcing parents, one of whom was played by Anjelica Huston. Beginning in 2013, she took on a recurring role as FBI agent Paige Willis in Zero Hour and joined the cast of HBO's The Newsroom, appearing in ten episodes as journalist Hallie Shea starting with the second episode of Season 2 on July 21, 2013. She also starred in the online miniseries Paloma for WIGS and had a supporting role in the 2013 Tommy Lee Jones film The Homesman. In November 2013, she made her first appearance in the American Horror Story franchise, and the following year appeared in seven episodes of American Horror Story: Freak Show as Penny.
In 2014 and 2015, Gummer starred alongside Halle Berry in both seasons of the Steven Spielberg-produced CBS series Extant, in which she was a main cast member. She had supporting roles in the 2014 film Learning to Drive and the 2015 romantic comedy Jenny's Wedding. In 2016, she appeared in the HBO film Confirmation, which addressed the Anita Hill controversy, and had a recurring role portraying Nora Ephron in the Amazon series Good Girls Revolt, which premiered in November 2016. On January 29, 2016, it was announced that Gummer had joined the USA Network series Mr. Robot as a series regular, playing FBI field agent Dominique "Dom" DiPierro. She appeared across the show's final three seasons, which premiered in July 2016, October 2017, and October 2019, respectively. Between seasons of Mr. Robot, she co-starred opposite Daniel Radcliffe in the action-thriller Beast of Burden and appeared in the comedy The Long Dumb Road, both premiering in 2018, as well as in the Billy Crystal film Standing Up, Falling Down, which premiered in spring 2019.
Gummer also returned to the stage during this period. She had a supporting role in the off-Broadway play Mary Page Marlowe, which began previews in June 2018. In fall 2018, she filmed The Hot Zone for National Geographic, appearing in four of the six episodes when the series aired in spring 2019. Following the completion of Mr. Robot's final season in 2019, she joined The Public Theater's production of A Bright Room Called Day, which opened in November 2019.
A fluent speaker of both English and Italian, Gummer lives in Los Angeles. She married musician Tay Strathairn, son of actor David Strathairn, on July 10, 2019; the couple separated after 42 days, on August 21, 2019, and the divorce was finalized in August 2020 after Gummer filed in Los Angeles on March 23, 2020. On September 4, 2021, it was announced that she had married British-American musician and record producer Mark Ronson after one year of dating.
