About
Grace Griswold (1871–1927) was an American actress and book writer who built a career spanning stage and silent film over more than two decades. Born in Ashtabula, Ohio, to Joseph B. Hall and Juliet Griswold, she received her education in the Chicago area. Before entering the theater, she worked as a secretary and journalist.
Griswold made her stage debut in November 1894 at Daly's Theatre in Shakespeare's Twelfth Night. Her Broadway career extended from 1900 to 1926, during which she established herself as a character actress. Among her early credits were The Village Postmaster and Cashel Byron, both in 1900, followed by Easy Dawson in 1905. Her breakout came with The Vanderbilt Cup in 1906, a production that was revived in 1907 and featured well-known performers of the era including Raymond Hitchcock, John Bunny, and Elsie Janis. She also shared the stage with Julie Herne and Mary Shaw over the course of her career.
Her subsequent Broadway appearances included Votes for Women in 1909, Over Night in 1911, Hamlet and The Point of View in 1912, The Poor Little Rich Girl and Who's Who in 1913, and The Good Men Do in 1918. She starred in both The Merry Widow and The Devil, and appeared in the plays The Main Line, An American Tragedy, and Service for Two. Billeted followed in 1922.
Griswold transitioned to silent film beginning with the 1921 George Arliss production of Disraeli. Her subsequent film appearances included Smilin' Through, One Exciting Night, and Anna Ascends, all in 1922, and The Ragged Edge in 1923. She died in 1927.
