About

Godfrey Quigley (4 May 1923 – 7 September 1994) was an Irish actor whose career spanned film, television, and stage, including a Broadway appearance in 1969. Born in Jerusalem, Mandatory Palestine, where his father was serving as a British Army officer, Quigley grew up in Ireland after his family returned there in the 1930s. Following military service during the Second World War, he trained at the Abbey School of Acting.

Quigley made his first film appearance in 1949 in Saints and Sinners. He went on to appear in two films directed by Stanley Kubrick: as the prison chaplain in A Clockwork Orange (1971) and as Captain Grogan in Barry Lyndon (1975). In 1983 he appeared in Educating Rita. On British television, he took on the role of a has-been gangster in the 1969 serial Big Breadwinner Hog.

In 1969, Quigley appeared on Broadway in The Mundy Scheme. His stage work also included the role of the Irishman in Tom Murphy's The Gigli Concert, a performance that earned him the Harvey's Best Actor Award in 1984.

During the 1950s, Quigley co-founded the Globe Theatre Company, whose members included his wife, the actress Genevieve Lyons. The company operated until 1960. During that same period, he produced the radio soap opera The Kennedys of Castleross.

Quigley died in Dublin on 7 September 1994 from Alzheimer's disease at the age of 71.
