About

Gloria Foster (November 15, 1933 – September 29, 2001) was an American actress whose career spanned Broadway, film, and television across four decades. Born in Chicago, Illinois, Foster was placed in the custody of her maternal grandparents as a young child. She never knew her father, and after her mother was hospitalized for mental illness, she relocated to Janesville, Wisconsin. Foster later attended the University of Illinois at Chicago, where she participated in theatrical productions without initially pursuing acting as a profession. Her path changed when her godmother introduced her to the Goodman Theatre in Chicago. She subsequently enrolled at the Goodman School of Drama at the Art Institute of Chicago, now part of DePaul University, where she was among a small number of African American students. She also developed professional skills through work at the Court Theater at the University of Chicago. Instructor Bella Itkin was a particularly formative influence, casting Foster in numerous classical roles during her training.

Foster's professional stage career began with a performance in In White America, in which she portrayed a thirteen-year-old Arkansas girl attempting to enter her school in Little Rock. Her Broadway career ran from 1961 to 1995 and included appearances in Purlie Victorious, A Hand Is on the Gate, and Yerma. She received a Theatre World Award in 1966. Over the course of her career she also earned three Obie Awards, recognizing her sustained contributions to off-Broadway theater. Foster became closely associated with producer Joe Papp, appearing in his productions of Long Day's Journey into Night, Chekhov's Cherry Orchard, Brecht's Mother Courage in an adaptation by Ntozake Shange, and Shakespeare's Coriolanus. In 1995 she returned to Broadway at the Booth Theatre, starring alongside Mary Alice in Having Our Say, in which she played 103-year-old Sadie Delany.

Foster's film career began with The Cool World in 1963, in which she played Mrs. Custis. It was on that set that she met actor Clarence Williams III, whom she married in 1967 and divorced in 1984. Her subsequent film credits included Nothing But a Man (1964), The Comedians (1967), The Angel Levine (1970), Man and Boy (1972), Leonard Part 6 (1987), and City of Hope (1991). She made two guest appearances on Williams's television series The Mod Squad, which ran from 1968 to 1973. Her television work also included I Spy, The Bill Cosby Show (1970), The Files on Jill Hatch (1983), the 1985 miniseries The Atlanta Child Murders, in which she played Camille Bell, the mother of victim Yusef Bell, The Cosby Show (1987), and two episodes of Law & Order in 1992 and 1997. In both Law & Order episodes her character, Satima Tate, was modeled on Betty Shabazz, the widow of Malcolm X. The first episode, Conspiracy (1992), centered on Malcolm X's assassination, while the second, Entrapment (1997), focused on her character's children seeking revenge against those they held responsible.

Foster played the Oracle in The Matrix (1999) and reprised the role in The Matrix Reloaded (2003). She died during the production of the latter film and was therefore unable to appear in the third installment; Mary Alice, her co-star from Having Our Say, assumed the role in The Matrix Revolutions and Enter the Matrix. Archive footage of Foster was later incorporated into The Matrix Resurrections (2021).

Outside of her professional life, Foster maintained a close friendship with actress Cicely Tyson, a fellow member of Delta Sigma Theta sorority. Though the two did not see each other frequently, Tyson noted that their telephone conversations often lasted for hours. Foster died on September 29, 2001, at the age of 67, from complications related to diabetes. A memorial service was held at Cypress Hills Cemetery in Brooklyn on October 15, 2001.
