About

Catherine Glesca Marshall was born on September 19, 1906, and died on August 21, 1987. An American actress and theatrical benefactor, she appeared on Broadway between 1927 and 1929, with credits including Katerina, The Cradle Song, The Would-Be Gentleman, and Peter Pan.

Marshall's connection to the theater extended beyond her Broadway work. She met actress Alla Nazimova, a silent screen performer, when both were cast in a production at the Civic Repertory Theater. The two became longtime companions, and Marshall eventually moved with Nazimova to the Garden of Allah Hotel on Sunset Boulevard near the Sunset Strip in Hollywood. The property had originally served as Nazimova's private estate during the silent film era before being converted into a hotel. Marshall resided in one of the villas on the grounds and remained there until Nazimova's death in 1945.

Later in her life, Marshall became the longtime companion of Emily Woodruff, a theatrical benefactor who served as the principal patron of the Springer Opera House in Columbus, Georgia. Woodruff was married to Hume Cronyn, though the two never lived together and Woodruff kept the marriage private. Marshall and Woodruff are buried together at Parkhill Cemetery in Columbus, Georgia.
