About

Glenn Christopher Scarpelli, born July 6, 1966, in the Staten Island borough of New York City, is an American actor and singer of Italian descent. He is the son of Henry Scarpelli, a longtime artist for Archie Comics. Scarpelli attended St. Joseph Hill Academy, a private Catholic school, from kindergarten through eighth grade.

Scarpelli entered professional theater at the age of ten, making his Broadway debut in 1977 in the play Golda, which starred Anne Bancroft. He returned to Broadway in 1979, taking on the role of Richard, Duke of York in a revival of Richard III that featured Al Pacino in the title role. The database credits his Broadway activity as spanning 1977 to 1979, with King Richard II and Golda listed among his verified stage credits.

His television career gained significant momentum when he was cast as Alex Handris on the long-running NBC sitcom One Day at a Time, a role he held from 1980 to 1983. Upon learning that the show's ninth season would limit his appearances to six episodes, Scarpelli opted to depart and instead joined the NBC sitcom Jennifer Slept Here. He also co-hosted the NBC game and human interest program Fantasy during the summer of 1983. Additional television credits include 3-2-1 Contact, Steven Spielberg's Amazing Stories, MacGyver, and The Love Boat. In 2019, he made a cameo appearance in the third season of the Netflix revival of One Day at a Time.

In 1983, Scarpelli released a self-titled pop album that included the single "Get a Love On." That same year, he was featured in issue No. 330 of Archie, dated July 1984.

In his personal life, Scarpelli came out as gay in adulthood. At age 20 in 1986, he began a relationship with Gary Scalzo, a talent agent who was 30 at the time. Scalzo was diagnosed with AIDS in 1987 and died on July 29, 1992, at age 36. Scarpelli subsequently settled in Sedona, Arizona, where he and his then-partner Jude Belanger founded the Sedona Now Network, a community television station, in 2003. The two married in California in 2008 but filed for divorce in 2012. Scarpelli maintained close friendships with his One Day at a Time co-stars Mackenzie Phillips and Bonnie Franklin until Franklin's death in 2013.

In 2021, Scarpelli began dating television producer John Ricci Jr., whom he met at a benefit for the Hollywood Museum. On April 19, 2023, Scarpelli announced via Instagram that he and Ricci had eloped. The couple divides their time between Sedona and Los Angeles, along with their dog, Poco.
