About
Glenn Carter is an English stage actor and singer-songwriter born on 27 March 1964 in Staffordshire, England. He trained at the Arts Educational School in London and has built a career performing leading roles in musical theatre productions on both sides of the Atlantic.
Carter's West End career spans a range of major musicals, including Grease, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Chess, Whistle Down the Wind, and Les Misérables. He became particularly associated with the role of Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar. When the Really Useful Theatre Company revived the show in the West End in 1996, sixteen years after the original production had closed, Carter was initially cast as Simon Zealotes before stepping into the lead role of Jesus, replacing Steve Balsamo. In 2008, Carter joined the London premiere of Jersey Boys as Tommy DeVito, a role he held through March 2010.
A film adaptation of Jesus Christ Superstar, directed by Gale Edwards and Nick Morris, was released in 2000 with Carter starring as Jesus. The cast also included Jérôme Pradon as Judas, Renee Castle as Mary Magdalene, and Rik Mayall as Herod. That same year, Carter made his Broadway appearance in the stage production of Jesus Christ Superstar.
Beyond the West End and Broadway, Carter has worked extensively in regional and repertory theatre. In 2007 he starred in Merrily We Roll Along at Derby Playhouse, where he also played Buzz Aldrin in Moon Landing. In 2011 he took on the title role in Floyd Collins at Southwark Playhouse, directed by Derek Bond. His television credits include appearances in The Bill and Doctors. In 2010, he was cast as the fictitious chat show host Patrick Chase in the music video for Chase and Status's single Let You Go.
Since 2002, Carter has served as the leader of the UK branch of the Raëlian Movement. Following Clonaid's claim to have cloned a human in 2002, Carter told the press that supporting evidence would be provided within days. In February 2003, he was announced as a participant in a panel debate on the ethics of human cloning held before an audience of Oxford University students.
