About

Glenn Anders (September 1, 1889 – October 26, 1981) was an American actor whose career on Broadway spanned from 1919 to 1957. Born in Los Angeles, California, to a father who had immigrated from Sweden, Anders trained at the Wallace dramatic school in California before beginning his professional life in vaudeville on the Orpheum circuit.

Anders arrived in New York City in 1919, the same year he made his Broadway debut in Just Around the Corner. He simultaneously pursued academic study at Columbia University, attending from 1919 until 1921. In 1921 he took the male lead in The Demi-Virgin, a farce that generated controversy while achieving commercial success. Over the following decades he built a substantial stage career, appearing in productions including Dynamo, Career Angel, Soldier's Wife, Light Up the Sky, and The Remarkable Mr. Pennypacker, among others.

Among the most distinguished chapters of his Broadway work was his participation in three Pulitzer Prize-winning plays. He appeared in Hell Bent for Heaven, written by Hatcher Hughes, and They Knew What They Wanted by Sidney Howard, both in 1924, followed by Eugene O'Neill's Strange Interlude in 1928.

Beyond the stage, Anders made a number of film and television appearances. He is perhaps best remembered on screen for his role as a scheming lawyer in Orson Welles' The Lady from Shanghai in 1947. He also appeared in M in 1951, a remake of Fritz Lang's 1931 film of the same title.

Anders died on October 26, 1981, at the age of 92 at the Actors' Fund Home in Englewood, New Jersey. He is interred at Kensico Cemetery in Valhalla, New York.
